Altenew | Watercolor Origami Card by Yana Smakula

Altenew | Watercolor Origami + Giveaway (now closed)!

Hello friends! I used to love to make all sorts of origami shapes when I was a little girl, my mom would teach me how to make frogs and all kinds of sail boats and other shapes, too bad I have forgotten how to make most of them. So to me, the Ori Kami stamp set from Altenew feels a bit special. I have a card using this set along with my all-time favorite Simple Shapes to share today.

Like this project? Pin it and save for later!

I started by heat embossing the elephant outline in Platinum embossing powder onto watercolor paper. I’m all out of my favorite Arches, so I’m using a new brand – Daler Rowney, not very happy with it, you can see my water coloring isn’t as nice here, but it will do for now. I used yellows and pinks (I can’t seem to let go of this color combo) from my Gansai Tambi set to color this image. Once it was dry I used a matching die to cut it out, although its a rather simple shape, it can easily be cut out using scissors.

To stamp the background I used the largest rectangle from the Simple Shapes set and several colors of ink – Warm Sunshine, Cotton Candy and Morning Frost. I alternated the colors and created a partial stamped background for my card. The sentiment was heat embossed directly onto the stamped panel and I used the same Platinum embossing powder I used to heat emboss the elephant.

I foam mounted my watercolor shape and added several clear sequins and drops from Pretty Pink Posh to finish this card.

    1. Such a lovely card, pinks & yellows rock! I love origami, used to make swans and such, my kids do some at school!

    1. I like oragami, but I never seem to get the crisp, clean look I see in the examples! I especially like oragami with paper money for gift-giving. Kids love getting money in the shapes of animals and things!

    1. Your origami elephant is so stylish, Yana! Yes, I love origami, although I’m somewhat clumsy in doing it (thank heavens for instruction books and online tutorials). In the previous school where I taught, we read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, and my students participated in creating 1000 cranes. So deeply touching! Thank you, yet again, for all the time, energy and creativity you invest in sharing your abundant talents with us! Your blog and videos are my daily highlights….

    1. I love the look of origami. However, it seems to complicated for me to dare to try it. This stamp set is a nice way to get the look for less (work). Haha. Beautiful card, as always!!

    1. Your little elephant is so adorable! I love looking at the art of origami – it’s fascinating! But I have never tried it myself.

    1. So cute. I have tried origami many times. I love it. My problem is that if I don’t keep doing it, I forget how to make the different shapes. Then I have to start over and learn each shape again. It has been so long that I can’t remember a thing!

    1. Fabulous done card. I
      don’t use origami, but
      I like looking at the
      designs.

    1. I like to use bills to make origami animals for children’s birthday cards. But I hear back from the parents they won’t undo them to spend the money.

    1. I think Origami is so cool. I don’t do it though. I did buy my daughter a book and papers to learn with.

    1. Yana – yes, I used to love origami! It is therapeutic to sit with a piece of paper and fold it until you have an amazing shape! And, like you…..I am addicted to the yellow and pink combination…..sometimes, I add orange!! After a long winter, they are such happy colors!

    1. Never really got into origami but it’s fun to try. Great way to gift money in heart shape or other. It was so cool when my SIL had cancer, her grandson’s teacher had all the kids make origami cranes. Their house was full of them. Apparently, there is a Japanese tradition that 1000 cranes bring good luck. Unfortunately, the cancer won out in just a couple months. Yana, your card is beautiful ~ love that color combo also!

    1. I actually do enjoy Origami. I don’t do it often. Every so often I get a hankering and I pull out my papers and start folding. Pretty soon the rest of my family is joining in and learning something new or just folding what they please.

    1. I love origami shapes, but have not made any, my students tried to teach me one year. I was not very successful, unfortunately! I do have one stamp set that has some origami shapes.

    1. I love origami though I have attempted it only a few times. Your card is lovely, pink and yellow certainly do play nicely together.

    1. Once we had a girl from Japan live with us for a year. It was a program named Youth For Understanding. She taught my daughter and I all kinds of origami shapes. My daughter still remembers how to make some of them. My favorite was a sort of ball shape.

    1. Love your card and the color combo. I love pink and yellow together and pink and orange. I love Origami but have never attempted to create anything. I should give it a try someday soon.

    1. A darling card! I love to make origami shapes for my grandkids. They love them.

    1. Thank you for the giveaway. I too loved origami as a child but only could make three. As soon as I say these stamps I had to have them for fond memories, and pass on.

    1. Yana, Thank you for sharing your lovely card. I used to enjoy origami; however after suffering a stroke 14 years ago, leaving my left harm and hand paralyzed, I find it difficult and frustrating to fold accurately with one hand.I still enjoy stamping and coloring and making cards. 1. Really beautiful card. Love the gorgeous colors. I am very fond of origami. I teach crafts to children every summer and make it a point to include at least one origami project. Usually we make boxes or bags that they can use later. And the children absolutely love it!

    1. Beautiful card! Love the dimension and colors!
I used to do some origami and I love the look! Have not tried any projects recently. I still want to master an origami heart!

    1. The OriKami set is so fun, and the elephant particularly precious. I do love the artwork of origami, and though I’ve tried it many a time with my kids, nieces and nephews, have never done well with making it myself.great to see I could now mimic a bit of the look thru stamping w/out feeling like a “folding failure” 🙂 Also- marvelous way to use the shapes for background to offset the oriKami elephant.

    1. Love your card as always. I love origami. It’s so clever. My Japanese students often make me wonderful examples.

    1. Your card is awesome, however, I’ve never tried origami and I really am not into it too much. Love my floral stamps! Have a blessed weekend, everyone!!

    1. Your card is great, love the colors used. I have always been fond of origami but I have some disabilities that keeps me from doing it myself but I’m fortunate enough to have others that do it for me. But I can feel like I do it sort of with these stamps.

    1. Lana, you little elephant is adorable!!! I do like the look of the origami, but my fingers don’t let me do it – LOL! SOOOOOOO, I bought this Altenew stamp set and I LOVE IT!!! Thanks for the inspiration….now off to get out my Altenew set!
