Hello friends, welcome back for another Yippee for Yana video. Today I’m sharing a layered stencil ink blending technique using the Receding Squares stencil to create a bold geometric background with a subtle optical illusion effect.

This is a great way to stretch a single stencil and build depth using simple layering.

CARD DETAILS

I started by securing a panel of white cardstock onto a tacky mat to keep everything in place while blending. The stencil stays positioned for the entire first layer.

To control the ink and keep sections clean, I created a simple mask using acetate from an old clear card base. This lets you isolate individual areas of the stencil and blend one section at a time without overlap.

For the first layer, I used a warm color palette and worked one color across all matching shapes before switching. This approach keeps the blending process smooth and efficient.

Once the first layer was complete, I cleaned the stencil, flipped it, and rotated it before aligning it back over the panel. This step creates the optical illusion look as the second layer interacts with the first.

For the second layer, I used lighter shades of the same colors and blended with a light hand to keep the layers crisp and prevent ink from seeping underneath the stencil.

When you remove the stencil, the layered design creates depth and movement, giving the background that dimensional, shifting effect.

To enhance the design further, I used the stencil for dry embossing. While the impression is subtle, it adds texture that complements the geometric pattern. Slightly offsetting the stencil during embossing adds even more visual interest.

With a bold background like this, I kept the rest of the card simple. I heat embossed a sentiment in white onto black cardstock, die cut it, and adhered it at a slight angle to contrast with the strong lines in the design.

I mounted the panel onto a colored card base and finished with a few embellishments for a touch of sparkle.

This layered stencil technique is an easy way to create eye-catching handmade cards using ink blending, color layering, and one stencil.
