CARD DETAILS
This card is all about movement. The graduation cap spins along a track, creating a playful “tossed in the air” effect that brings the design to life.
I used the Classic Mouse Graduation die set to create my character, along with the coordinating sentiments set for the foiled “congrats grad” greeting. These dies are beautifully designed and very easy to assemble. I recommend keeping the assembly guide handy for future use – it makes the process quick and stress-free.
To create the interactive element, I used a track die from the Hero Arts Wild Ride set. This die cuts the opening that allows the cap to move and spin. The motion is powered by the Snap & Slide mechanism from Pear Blossom Press, which makes building interactive cards incredibly simple.
I started by die-cutting and foiling my front panel, then reinforced it by layering it with an additional panel. This helps keep everything sturdy and ensures smooth movement.
The Snap & Slide pieces are attached to the back of the graduation cap and inserted through the track. Once assembled, the cap slides and spins effortlessly. It’s such a fun detail and really elevates the card.
One important tip here is to use thicker foam adhesive (or double up your regular foam adhesive) behind your panel. This creates enough space for the mechanism to move freely. If the foam is too thin, the slider can get stuck or not spin as smoothly.
I finished the card by adding the die-cut character with foam adhesive, placing her so the cap appears to land back in her hand. I also added the year using die-cut numbers and a few enamel dots for a bit of sparkle.
This is a great project for celebrating graduates and a fun way to add a unique, interactive touch to your handmade cards. This card may look complex at first, but once you understand how the mechanism works, it’s actually very straightforward and so much fun to create.
