Simon Says Stamp | We're Sleeping Under The Same Stars Galaxy Card

Hello, friends! I seem to be going back to my watercolors these days – I’m enjoying doing some quick coloring here and there using watercolor pencils and traditional watercolors. Today I wanted to share a Miss You card with a galaxy background.

CARD DETAILS

Every time I sit down to create a galaxy I stop mid-way because I never like how it looks. Then, I remember a brilliant advice from Kristina Werner –  to add black. I add black and just like that even the ugliest painting transforms into a beautiful galaxy.

I started working on this card by stamping several images in VersaFine Onyx Black ink onto watercolor panel (I used Arches Hot Press watercolor paper which is smooth and perfect for watercoloring stamped images). I stamped several stars from the Seeing Stars set and a house from the Christmas Town set as well as a touching sentiment.

After taping my watercolor panel onto a board I used Gansai Tambi watercolors and did some quick coloring. I think it took under 10 minutes to complete it. I first added yellow, next blue, then purple. I dried my paper in between each layer/color. Lastly I added lots of black and gray.

While my panel was still taped to the board I added drops of white paint and also sprayed my piece with Distress Mica Spray. I love using this product for Galaxy backgrounds, it instantly creates a WOW factor.

Finally I removed the tape that was holding my paper on the board and adhered panel onto A2 top folding card base. I intentionally did my stamping prior to watercoloring and also intentionally taped the edges of the paper off to have a nice white border/outline – I feel it adds a lot to the simplicity of this card and helps to frame the piece.

  1. Lovely. When I first looked I thought you had done a TARDIS. Look up the BBC show–doctor who to understand my reference

  2. The background is so amazing !! Thank you for the good advice about adding the back and mica spray. TFS !

  3. What a great idea for a card. I’m amazed at how well the black works. Luv the village stamp set!
I really enjoy making unique watercolor backgrounds, but I’m an old dog trying to learn new tricks!! Sometimes I have surprises that won’t work as backgrounds. I use those “oops” backgrounds for stamping/die-cutting shapes. The ugliest splotches take on new life as flowers, trees, boats, whatever works!! Yesterday, I watercolored a dozen backgrounds, five of which I die-cut today when the paper was thoroughly dry. It’s nice to have some already finished handmade backgrounds in my stash for when I don’t have time to let the paper dry. ♥

  4. What an amazing background it really makes the card pop and anything with a house scene is just adorable….I want to live in that house lol! Have a most wonderful day. Cheers Donna Z 🙂

  5. Love , Love, Love your work . You are one of my favorite artist – You never disappoint. Beautiful cards

  6. Your background is out of this word! So awesome, I’m speechless!
Such a great idea to incorporate a house into this design. It makes the card both magical and cozy.
