Today I’m sharing a fun stencil layering technique that can completely transform your card backgrounds. And no — I’m not talking about layering stencils that were designed to work together in one set. Instead, I’m layering stencils from two completely different and unrelated stencil sets to create extra depth and visual interest on my card.

This technique is easy, creative, and a wonderful way to stretch your supplies.

For this project, I created a floral 5×7 birthday card featuring the Altenew Garland Grace Stamp Set along with its coordinating coloring stencils. After completing the floral ink blending, I layered an additional striped stencil pattern over the background to add subtle texture and movement to the design.

The result is soft, artistic, and dimensional without requiring complicated masking.

Working with Large Floral Stamp Sets

Whenever I work with a larger floral image, I often prefer creating a 5×7 card instead of an A2 card. The larger format gives the design room to breathe and allows the floral images to really shine.

To create my background, I stamped the large floral cluster three times onto an 8.5” x 5.5” panel using black ink. I used the Altenew Stampwheel and removed the side stopper so the paper could extend beyond the edge of the platform. This makes it much easier to stamp oversized images and create repeating patterns without limitations.

One helpful tip when stamping large backgrounds is to use a piece of clear acetate to preview stamp placement before making the next impression. This allows you to position the image exactly where you want it without accidentally smudging wet ink.

Ink Blending with Coloring Stencils

The coordinating stencil set includes simple coloring layers for the flowers and leaves. Instead of relying only on the stencil design for dimension, I added extra interest through directional ink blending.

For the large pink flowers, I blended lighter pink ink first and then added darker pink shading using a detailed blending brush. Rather than blending in circular motions everywhere, I used small flicking motions similar to coloring with markers or paint strokes. This created extra depth even though the stencil only included two floral layers.

For the greenery, I used multiple green ink shades to build dimension gradually and keep the foliage vibrant and natural.

Protecting Your Grip Mat While Ink Blending

One of my favorite crafting tricks is using acetate sheets over exposed areas of my grip mat during ink blending.

When blending through stencils that extend beyond the cardstock panel, it’s very easy to transfer ink onto the grip mat. Over time, leftover ink can contaminate future blending and accidentally alter colors.

By laying scrap acetate over exposed areas, I keep the mat much cleaner and avoid transferring unwanted color onto future projects.

The Fun Part: Layering an Unrelated Stencil

Here’s where the fun happens.

After completing all the floral ink blending, I layered a striped stencil from the Sweet Harvest Stencil Set over the finished floral background. Using a very light blue ink, I softly blended color into the open white areas around the flowers.

I did not mask the florals. Instead, I carefully blended around the images while allowing a little overlap here and there. The slight overlap actually enhances the artistic feel of the design and keeps the background soft and organic.

This is one of my favorite ways to stretch stencil supplies. Basic background patterns like stripes, dots, grids, or geometric shapes can completely change the feel of a floral card when layered thoughtfully over ink blending.

If you haven’t tried combining stencils from different sets before, I highly encourage you to experiment with it.

Adding Color to the Inside of the Card

Lately, I’ve been enjoying using colored cardstock for card bases instead of plain white.

For this card, I used a soft ruby cardstock for the card base, which creates an unexpected pop of color inside the card when opened. I also added a second ink-blended striped panel to the back of the card for a polished finished look.

These small details make handmade cards feel extra special and thoughtfully designed.

Finishing the Card

To complete the design, I added a layered “Happy Birthday” sentiment popped up with foam adhesive near the bottom of the card. Placing the sentiment low on the design feels slightly unexpected, but I love how it balances the large floral arrangement.

A few Mother of Pearl embellishments finished everything off beautifully.

Give This Technique a Try

If you have stencil sets in your stash that haven’t been used together before, try mixing them. Pair florals with geometric patterns, stripes with leaves, or dots with botanical designs. Sometimes the most interesting backgrounds come from unexpected combinations.

And if you try this stencil layering technique on one of your cards, be sure to share it online and tag me — I’d love to see what you create!
