Spellbinders | Holiday DIY Color Deck Inspiration. Video

Hello, crafty friends! Today, I’m excited to share a special project inspired by the brand-new Holiday DIY Color Deck Expansion Pack from Spellbinders. If you’ve never used a Color Deck before, it’s a fabulous tool designed to help jumpstart your creativity, especially when it comes to selecting color palettes. Each card includes a holiday-themed image with gorgeous tones, along with blank spaces to swatch your combinations. Watch my video about the Color Deck HERE.

Spellbinders recently featured a fun color challenge over on their blog, inviting three guest designers (myself included!) to interpret the same Color Deck card in our unique ways. I loved this idea and couldn’t wait to dive in! You can see the post on the Spellbinders blog here to explore all three interpretations and get inspired.

CARD DETAILS

The inspiration card featured cozy winter houses in rich tones, and several colors immediately jumped out at me:

• Oceanside – a beautiful dark blue-green, perfect for moody winter vibes

• Fog & Seaside – light neutrals to reflect the snowy sky

• Poppy – a bold red pulled from some of the homes

• Mirror Gold – a nod to holiday sparkle

• Dahlia & Wild Berry – lush pinks to complement the reds and add warmth

You’ll see that everyone identified different colors from this color card, and that’s the beauty of the Color Deck – you are not given pre-defined colors, but rather an inspiration image, and you decide which colors work best.

I pre-die-cut all my pieces and began laying them out to form a balanced arrangement. I created three main clusters of poinsettias, each surrounded by leaves and berries in varying tones. To make things pop, I backed all the elements with black foam adhesive squares for depth and visual interest.

I kept my background simple – a trimmed 4” x 5.25” Oceanside panel, which I layered onto a matching A2 card base for a tone-on-tone look with beautiful dimension.

Here’s a look at my completed project – elegant, dimensional, and full of festive color. I loved translating the inspiration card into something tactile, and I hope this shows how powerful color prompts like these can be in helping you get started on a design.
