Simon Says Stamp | Monochromatic Floral Backgrounds — A Fresh Twist on a Favorite Technique

Hello, crafty friends! Welcome back for another Yippee for Yana video! Today I’m taking a little creative walk down memory lane — and giving it a colorful, updated spin. You might remember a set of cards I made nine years ago (how has it been that long?!) using the Oh Happy Day stamp set from Simon Says Stamp. It was one of my favorite projects at the time — and today, I’m revisiting that same concept with its brand new (and seriously fabulous) remake: Happy Day.

CARD DETAILS

You’ll want three shades of the same color, from light to dark. The Simon Says Stamp Pawsitively Saturated Inks make this incredibly easy — they’re grouped into trios, and bonus: they don’t stain your stamps.

Here are some of the color families I used:

Start with your lightest color and stamp your floral image a few times in a loose triangle arrangement. This helps create a naturally balanced background. Move on to your medium shade, adding more florals around the first layer. Finally, stamp a few with the darkest shade — no need to clean your stamp in between! Overlap your flowers — no masking needed! It adds instant depth without any extra effort. Use the darkest ink to stamp the flower centers for contrast and definition.

I trimmed my finished backgrounds to 3 ¾” x 5”, then foam-mounted them to white card bases for a clean frame. All my cards feature the “Have a Happy Day” sentiment from the set, stamped in VersaFine Onyx Black, and cut with the coordinating die (backed with a second die-cut for dimension, of course!).

To finish, I added a few stamped leaves in Pearfection ink and sprinkled in some Aura sequins from Spellbinders — because I’m me, and sparkle is basically a neutral.

This is one of those tried-and-true techniques that always delivers. It’s a fantastic way to: use your color families cohesively; build custom backgrounds with zero masking; revisit older stamps in your stash with a modern twist

If you’ve been feeling a little stuck with your florals lately, I highly recommend giving this method a go — it’s easy, elegant, and endlessly customizable.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope this inspired you to pull out your floral stamps and try something new (or something old with a fresh twist).
