Spellbinders | Hot Foiling & Stamping – Birthday Card with Foiled Basics Collection & WPlus9 Florals

I’ve been meaning to share this card for over a month now, but somehow I always forgot to photo it. Finally, I had a big pile of projects to take pictures of the other day and took photos of this one. It is probably my current favorite card – I love the foiled dots, the florals, and the embossed texture in the background! Plus, this card was sort of an experiment – I wanted to see how far I would be able to stretch the foil.

CARD DETAILS

I started making this card by foiling the Polka Dot Strip glimmer plate in gold foil on white cardstock (by the way, Simon’s 120lb white cardstock works best for foiling, it is ultra-smooth and always gives me perfect results). This glimmer plate is from my Foiled Basics collection from Spellbinders. I wanted to try stamping images over the foil to see if it would resist the stamping as act as a mask. I pulled out Thinking of You floral set from WPlus9 (I recently shared another card using this set HERE) and stamped florals in various colors of ink.

The colored ink, I used dye ink from WPlus9, didn’t leave any stamped impression on the foiled dots (perhaps it did, but it is not visible). The black stamped outline, however, did leave marks on the foil. I used Versafine Onyx Black ink, which is pigment ink. I did let the pigment ink dry on top of the foil, I could have wiped it clean, but I was running the risk of smearing it all over the background.

Another observation worth mentioning is that stamping with solid images over foiled designs pulls the foil off the paper, it lifts it up. So double stamping over foiled images is not the best idea unless your intention is to lift the foil off the page.

Next, I tried dry embossing over my foiling and that worked out beautifully. I used the FSJ Love Stripe embossing folder and embossed the background in my Deep Sea Die Cutting machine. I did dry emboss over foiling in the past, so I knew it would work. I’ve shared that experiment HERE.

I cut the background apart and made room for a skinny strip sentiment. I foiled one that reads “Time To Celebrate“. I also foiled my Happy Birthday sentiment and added light pink ink blending at the bottom of the die cut for an ombre look.

The card was embellished using Nuvo Crystal Gems and Morning Dew Drops from Tonic Studios and a few gold die-cut leaves from an older Spellbinders die.
