If you’re in the mood for spring crafting, this project is for you. Today I’m sharing how to turn a floral cluster into a statement design on a larger 5×7 card, plus a simple technique to match your die-cut background to your cardstock for a seamless, polished look.
This is one of those techniques that feels a little bit magical once you try it — and it’s surprisingly easy to do.

CARD DETAILS
The floral image I’m using comes from the Altenew Happy Blossom set. It’s designed with A2 cards in mind, but instead of using it once as a focal point, I repeated the cluster three times to fill a larger 5×7 panel.
This is a great trick to keep in mind — you don’t always need bigger stamps to make bigger cards. Repetition does the work for you and creates a fuller, more dynamic design.
I arranged the clusters so they frame the center of the card, leaving space for a sentiment. This gives the card a balanced look while still feeling full and detailed.
Soft Spring Colors with Ink Blending
For coloring, I used the coordinating layering stencils and Altenew inks. Instead of following the exact color suggestions, I mixed things up a bit and used multiple colors for the flowers to create that soft spring meadow feel.
I kept everything light and pastel. One tip I shared in the video — I like to start with the foliage layer first. It’s usually the fullest layer, and once it’s in place, aligning the rest of the stencil layers becomes much easier. I also used small blending brushes, which helped avoid the need for masking in most areas. You can also use the Micro Blending Brushes I have on offer for you to create this look.
Controlled “Splatter” with a Pen
Instead of traditional splatter (which can get messy fast), I added small dots using a fine liner pen.
This gives you:
- full control over placement
- consistent size
- no cleanup
It’s a simple detail, but it adds texture and visual interest without overpowering the design.
Matching the Die Cut Background to Cardstock
This is one of my favorite techniques in this project. Before stamping the outline, I colored the background of the die cut using a light blue alcohol marker to match the cardstock panel.
Here’s why this works so well:
- it eliminates the white edge around the die cut
- helps the image blend seamlessly into the background
- creates a more cohesive and polished look
I recommend doing this step before stamping the outline — it feels less intimidating and gives you more control.
If you’re working with darker colors, heat embossing the outline first can help act as a barrier and prevent bleeding.
Stamping and Finishing the Die Cuts
Once the coloring was done, I stamped the outline in black ink for a crisp, detailed look and die cut the images. To make the delicate die cuts sturdier, I adhered each one to a second die cut layer. This adds stability and makes it easier to handle and adhere with foam tape. I also colored the flower centers with a black pen for contrast — a small detail that really makes the design pop.
Assembling the Card
I used foam adhesive to pop up the floral clusters and add dimension. Before adhering everything, I lightly marked the placement with pen dots. These dots serve a dual purpose:
- decorative texture
- placement guides for easy assembly
For the sentiment, I chose to stamp it directly onto the background. This keeps the focus on the florals and avoids adding extra bulk.
To finish the card, I added Altenew Mother of Pearl gems — they stand out beautifully against the soft colors.
BONUS CARD
Here’s the bonus card I created using the extra floral cluster I had on hand. I simply embossed the background using the Cozy Spaces 3D embossing folder to add texture.
Final Thoughts
This card is a perfect example of how a smaller stamp set can be used to create something bold and special. Between the repeated florals, soft ink blending, and background matching technique, the finished result feels cohesive, dimensional, and very spring-inspired.
