Brutus Monroe | Stamped Faux Watercolor Backgrounds

Sometimes watercolor can be so very difficult to conquer and almost impossible to predict. So often times I like to look for stamps that allow me to create the look of watercolor without actual coloring. A Watercolor Background stamp from Brutus Monroe is a fantastic example of a great faux watercolor stamp one can use to create unique watercolor-like backgrounds (another great example is a butterfly stamp from Concord & 9th I showcased earlier this year).

CARD DETAILS

I started working on this card by looking for a quick way to add color to the rose without doing any actual coloring. I wanted to watercolor it, but didn’t have the time to pull out my Daniel Smith paints. So I grabbed a few colors of ink from Simon (any dye inks will work for this, pigment inks should also work, but they will overlap a bit differently), a MISTI stamp positioner and a Watercolor Background stamp.

I inked my stamp up using 2 shades of yellow and 2 shades of blue – High Dive, Maliblue, Duckling & Sunshine. Intentionally overlapped blue and yellow to create shades of green in a few sections. Because I was using a stamp positioner I was able to double stamp the image and get a more vibrant impression.

Next, I rotated the paper inside my MISTI 180 degrees and stamped same background but using just lighter colors – Duckling and Maliblue. This created even greater color variation, especially where previously inked yellow was now inked with blue (I purposely didn’t clean the stamp).

Once my background stamping was dry I heat embossed Enchanted Rose background in Simon’s Antique Gold embossing powder. I thought about using white, but felt like gold would look much better against the vibrant yellow.

I trimmed my background to 4 x 5 1/2″ and foam mounted onto an A2 side folding card base. To create a sentiment for this card I picked one from the Hello Beautiful stamp set and stamped it in black onto a white cardstock panel, later foam mounted it onto the card.

MORE STAMPED FAUX WATERCOLOR BACKGROUND IDEAS

You can create many more faux watercolor background with this stamp. I used multiple colors for my card, but here I have a few examples where I used different shades of one color and stamped each background 3 times rotating my paper 90 degrees each time. The teal one is my favorite, but I also love yellow!
