Spellbinders | Be Bold Collection – Lemon Birthday Card. Video

Hello, crafters! Today I am creating a Lemon Branch Birthday Card with Spellbinders Be Bold collection products. This project features die-cutting and dry embossing only. We won’t be doing any stamping or foiling at all.

This month Spellbinders launched several new absolutely amazing collections. Among them – my Yana’s Blooms collection, which I’ve shared about in several previous posts/videos, and Be Bold collection – this one is so true to the name, as it features stunning bold imagery for all occasions cards.

CARD DETAILS

My favorite product from this collection is the Lemon Zest die set, somehow I am always drawn to images of lemons, I don’t know why, maybe due to their tropical nature or their color, but images of lemons always inspire me.

The Lemon Zest die set is designed brilliantly with the color block component in mind. The lemon branch consists of the main branch image and additional leaf parts which you’ll need to cut from either lighter or darker color cardstock to color block it. The term color blocking is very popular in fashion and I’m glad to see it making its way into cardmaking. Color blocking is the use of contrasting blocks or panels of solid, typically bright colors. I used different shades of green to color block the leaves on the lemon branch. I didn’t go too bold, but you can be very dramatic and very bold with this die set by using very different greens – a very light and a very dark one.

This die set also comes with small flowers and I found I like to shape mine with a stylus before adding them to the branch as this gives them dimension and makes them more life-like. There’s also another flower die-cut, the side flower, and that one is designed to go onto one of the stems. Note that there are 2 kinds of stems – one with a fatter end, designed to go with the side flower, and one with the skinner end, designed to go with the lemon.

There are 2 different lemons die cuts in this set – I cut mine from Simon’s Banana cardstock, this is the most lemony yellow color I have in my stash and I used my inks and blending brushes to blend either a bit of yellow, to have the lemon appear ripe, the yellow I used was Citrine from Simon or a bit of green, to have the lemon appear green and for the green color I used Celery, also from Simon. I also blended both colors onto some of the lemons – yellow onto the bottom and green onto the top to give it lots of color variation.

The size of the branch is pretty big, allowing it to take center stage on a standard size card. You’ll just need one branch for one spectacular card. I love the combination of green, yellow, and dark blue, so I decided I would create a dark blue background for my card – I used a panel of Simon’s Soft Navy cardstock, and to add interest to the background, I dry embossed it with the new Optical Archer embossing folder in my new Limited Edition Aqua machine.

I wanted to add darkness to the edges of this embossed panel, so I used my Royal ink from Simon, this is a very dark blue and I ink blended loads of ink around the edged of the panel. Next, I die cut sentiment for this card – a Happy Birthday sentiment since I am short on Birthday cards. I used the birthday sentiment die that comes with the new Limited Edition Aqua Machine. I adore the font used for this die and the size is perfect for the type of cards that I make.

To pop this sentiment up I die-cut one from gold glitter paper, which is my main sentiment, and one from black fun foam. I foam mounted my lemon branch onto the background, I added the little side flowers and I also adhere the sentiment below the branch.

Lastly, I added several gold gems onto the card – I used the smaller gems as flower centers and also scattered some onto the card – on o the background and some onto the leaves and the lemon.

Have fun crafting!

    1. WOW! Who would have thought lemons could make such a great card. This is a great masculine card and loved you’re showing how the lemons and flowers were constructed. That foam is great. Thank you.
